Pittsburgh Foundation’s Oliphant Ponders Nonprofit Mergers

Pittsburgh Foundation President and CEO Grant Oliphant said he’s seeing “a significant increase” in interest among nonprofit organizations to consider mergers. Just over the past few months, he has an expanded perspective: Pittsburgh Foundation and Community Foundation of Westmoreland County merged, effective July 1. Both are community foundations, made up of distinctive funds established by individuals and organizations. Oliphant has been asked to speak about mergers at the Council on Foundations fall conference.

Investor Paul Allen Pledges Bulk of Fortune to Philanthropy

Microsoft Corp. co-founder Paul Allen said Thursday that he will give away the majority of his fortune, following a recent call by his former partner Bill Gates for billionaires to publicly pledge at least half of their wealth to philanthropy. In a statement, Mr. Allen, 57 years old, said that his “philanthropic efforts will continue after my lifetime.”
