The death toll soared to near 300 Thursday as rescuers dug through rubble from Mississippi to Virginia in the nation’s deadliest natural disaster since Hurricane Katrina. It was what they call a tornado outbreak, something rarely seen on such a scale. Not since April 3, 1974, has the United States witnessed so much destruction from twisters, and tornado experts say Wednesday, April 27, 2011, may go down in history as the most destructive outbreak in eight decades.

Gates Foundation Offers 88 Grants to Explore Unusual Ideas to Improve Global Health

The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation is shining a light on toilets and the waste that is supposed to go in them in the sixth round of its grand challenges project. The foundation on Thursday announced 88 new $100,000, five-year grants for unusual research, including a number in a new category for the program: sanitation. It’s a topic that doesn’t get a lot of attention — financially or otherwise — from charitable foundations, said one of the recipients of the grants just announced.

Social Innovation Fund Money Hits the Streets

We are now one step closer to discovering whether the Social Innovation Fund, the new federal grant program designed to help nonprofits expand effective social projects, will fulfill its promise. Following a controversy last summer over charges that its awards process was too secretive, the fund has fallen out of the headlines. But the 11 organizations that won a total of $50-million in the first round of grants have been quietly going about distributing the money to the nonprofit groups that will actually do the work.
