3 Feb 2010There was something a little different about the Next Generation Retreat this year. Co-conceived by 21/64 and Resource Generation and held for the past seven years at the Family Philanthropy Conference, this half-day interactive session is geared towards those in their 20s and 30s contemplating their role—present and future—in their family’s philanthropy.
What the facilitators noticed at this year’s session was that into the room walked several next geners with a Baby Boomer parent in tow. Off-the-record candid conversations in this space have historically meant those in the absence of parents. But this year the attendance was slightly altered. The Generation Xers and Yers who came accompanied seemed all too pleased to have these discussions with their peers and parents present and participating. Perhaps parent and child needed this type of setting to start or continue a dialogue? Whatever the reason, we welcomed the modeling of parents and their adult children talking ‘with’ rather than ‘to’ one another.
